Bringing it back to that sweet sweet time in hip hop, let’s go back to 2001 when Lakey the Kid released The 41st Side Album. This album was great because it showcased, yet again, the crazy talent that Queensbridge artists possess. When all of them get together on an album it is usually a recipe for something wonderful. I think this was about 2 years or so after Lake had been released from prison and all the of the artists in his neighborhood were on board to help put together this album.
Not only was this album well received, it also sold quite a bit of albums for an independent album. It sold over 100,000 albums and I think a lot has to do with the well known artists that made appearances but it also was a very well put together album. The only artist that I think it is really missing is Blaq Poet, no idea why he wasn’t on there but that would have been the icing on the cake.
Usually I think that interludes are useless in most cases for albums because it can be annoying but these interludes made sense and it melded well with the vibe of the album. Most of the heavy hitters in Queensbridge made an appearance on the album like Mobb Deep, Nas, Cormega, Capone N Noreaga, Bars & Hooks, Foul Monday, Crag G and the list goes on.
One of the stand out tracks that I also wanted to mention is a solo track from Killa Sha. He has that really unique voice that stands out and the beat was insane. The track is titled “Do My Thang” and Killa Sha goes in on this one. Unfortunately Killa Sha passed away a few years ago due to health complications but if you are into his music you can still check out some of the mixtapes and album that he released. There was also a rumor that a posthumous album was going to be released but it hasn’t seen the light of day yet.
Lake sort of fell back from doing hip hop but to be honest, it would be great if he got back into it. Every project he was a part of sounded great. He has an album with him and Cormega, another mixtape when he was signed to Suge Knight’s Death Row East called 848 that includes Ruc the Jackal, Mike Delorean, Saiku 720 and hardbody.
